‏These stamps are the first definitive issue stamps bearing the name of the United Arab Emirates. They were issued a year after the establishment of the General Postal Services Department under the Ministry of Communications, in 1973.
‏The stamps feature unique designs, with the primary stamp in the series depicting a portrait of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in the center. The other denominations vary in design, featuring either the state’s emblem with a contrasting background or the UAE flag surrounding a map of the country, highlighting major landmarks of each emirate.
‏It is worth noting that the 2-dirham stamp was withdrawn from circulation due to an error in the name of the depicted fort. It was labeled “Hisn al-Falaj” instead of “Hisn Umm al-Quwain.”
تعتبر هذه الطوابع أول مجموعة طوابع بريدية اعتيادية تحمل اسم دولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة. تم إصدارها بعد عام واحد من إنشاء الإدارة العامة للخدمات البريدية التابعة لوزارة المواصلات، وذلك في عام ١٩٧٣.
الطوابع تحمل تصاميم فريدة، حيث يظهر في الطابع الأساسي للمجموعة صورة الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان في وسط الطابع. وفي الفئات الأخرى، تختلف التصاميم بين وجود شعار الدولة مع خلفية متباينة أو علم دولة الإمارات يحيط بخريطة الدولة، بالإضافة إلى ابراز أهم معالم كل إمارة. 
يجدر بالإشارة إلى أن الطابع فئة ٢ درهم قد تم سحبه من التداول بسبب وجود خطأ في اسم الحصن المُصوَّر. فقد تم كتابة "حصن الفلج" بدلاً من "حصن أم القيوين".
