في 17 مارس 1969، نشرت جريدة "الرأي العام" مقابلة مع الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان، حاكم أبوظبي، حيث صرّح بأن أبواب أبوظبي مفتوحة للكويتيين ولهم حق التملك فيها، مشيرًا إلى الروابط الوثيقة بين الكويت والخليج، وأن ما يضر أو يفيد أحدهما ينعكس على الآخر. وأكد أن أبوظبي ستعتمد على الخبرات الكويتية في التنمية.
تحدث الشيخ زايد أيضًا عن تقدم إمارات الخليج نحو الاتحاد، مشيدًا بالخطوات التي تحققت، ومؤكدًا على وحدة الشعب الخليجي ومشاركته في الخير والموارد.
كما تناول الحديث تعاون الكويت وأبوظبي، وأشاد الشيخ زايد بدعم الكويت لإمارات الخليج في مختلف المجالات. من جانبه، أكد الشيخ سعد العبد الله، وزير الداخلية والدفاع الكويتي، استعداد الكويت لتقديم الدعم العسكري والمادي والثقافي والاقتصادي للخليج.
وخلال زيارته للكويت، التقى الشيخ زايد أمير الكويت في قصر السيف، حيث تم بحث العلاقات الثنائية، واتحاد الإمارات، وانسحاب بريطانيا من الخليج في 1971.

‏On March 17, 1969, Al-Rai Al-Aam newspaper published an interview with Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi. He stated that Abu Dhabi’s doors are open to Kuwaitis, granting them the right to own property, emphasizing the strong ties between Kuwait and the Gulf, where any harm or benefit to one reflects on the other. He also confirmed that Abu Dhabi would rely on Kuwaiti expertise for its development.
‏Sheikh Zayed discussed the progress of the Gulf Emirates towards union, praising the achieved steps and affirming the unity of the Gulf people in sharing prosperity and resources.
‏The discussion also touched on the cooperation between Kuwait and Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Zayed commended Kuwait’s support for the Gulf Emirates in various fields. In turn, Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah, Kuwait’s Minister of Interior and Defense, expressed Kuwait’s readiness to provide military, material, cultural, and economic support to the Gulf.
‏During his visit to Kuwait, Sheikh Zayed met with the Amir of Kuwait at Seif Palace, where they discussed bilateral relations, the UAE union, and Britain’s withdrawal from the Gulf in 1971.
